Cannon students collect for HeroBox

At Cannon School, all students in grades 9-12 must put in at least 40 hours of “service learning,” or volunteer time, over the course of four years in order to graduate.

Juniors Mallory Chepke and Shelby Dyl, both 17 and from Davidson, said they’ve already easily surpassed that number by helping at their churches and volunteering with area nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity and The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Most recently, the duo led an effort at their school for HeroBox, a two-year-old national nonprofit that “sponsors” deployed U.S. soldiers and sends moral support via customized care packages and letters.

6 year old’s efforts to support the troops.

“Our family sponsors troops through HeroBox, so my son is familiar with the cause. I was asked by his kindergarten teacher to organize the Christmas party for his class, when I asked my son if he had any good ideas for the party he asked if we could dedicate it to our troops! With tears in my eyes I responded with a resounding yes and we began our mission to inform the school of our plans. We used the list off of your site to make a list of wanted items and conformed a letter to the parents asking for donations. The kids decorated Christmas cards and we packed a HeroBox full of goodies and sent them to the troops.  Not only did the kids feel good about what they had done but we used it as a lesson on the spirit of giving. It was the best party ever!
Thanks for the opportunity!” ~ Kate and Bailey Jackson

The Riley Family and their Hero

The Riley Family (Chris, Christian, Allison and Alexia) adopted SGT Craig Cooper this summer as their Hero.  After building a relationship with him, they realized he had a wife and two beautiful daughters back home.  So they reached out to them too.  Below is their initial email to Mrs Cooper.  Guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Hello “Mrs. Sgt. Craig Cooper,”

My wife (Christian) and I got hooked up with your husband Craig a few weeks back through Herobox.  We were very proud to be paired up with such a great American and leader.  We are also smart enough to know that behind every good man is an even better woman, so I hope you don’t mind us reaching out to you.  We cannot imagine how difficult it must be for you all to be apart, especially with your two little girls at home.  (We too have two little girls, ages 6 and 3).  Anyway, we asked Craig if we could send you your own Herobox, perhaps a gift card or the like; hopefully you could use it to splurge on yourself or get something fun for the kids or enjoy a night out on behalf of a family who sincerely appreciates everything that your family does for our country.

If you don’t mind, you can send us your address and we will drop something in the mail.  If you’d rather not send out your address, I am sure my wife knows how to send an online gift card that you could access (that’s too technical for me).

Thanks again for all that you guys do.

Chris and Christian (and Allison and Alexia) Riley

Belinda’s Story

My name is Belinda Wallace, and this is my Herobox Story.

One day, my mom was listening to her favorite DJ, Mara Davis, on Dave Fm. She heard about Herobox from Mara Davis.  My mom and I decided to get involved as a summer project and collect some items to donate for Herobox. Soon, I made up a flyer of what I was doing and it was posted on my neighborhood website so people could find out about Herobox.  On 4th of July my friends and I went to my neighborhood pool for a few hours and set up a stand asking people to donate, and people started donating things for Herobox. I also called lots of people from my neighborhood phonebook, and asked them to donate items.  My friend Jodie and I wrote a “script” so we would remember what to say when we were leaving messages or talking to people on the phone. I received a big variety of things for the soldiers from many people.  My friends helped me make more phone calls to the people in my neighborhood during July, and after that, we had even more donations. Overall, I collected more than 400 items for Herobox. Here are some of the things we delivered:  beef jerky, undershirts, socks, Hamburger Helper, powerbars, batteries, hand sanitizer, CD’s, books and magazines, babywipes, baseball caps, and lots more.

My mom and I went to HeroBox and the people were very polite and told me all about HeroBox. I met Ryan Housely who is the founder, and John (who reminded me of Jack Black). I’m glad I helped this organization and my mom and I want to do more soon. I hope all of the soldiers like their items that will be sent to them by Herobox.
