In Remembrance, In Honor

Today we remember the American citizens that perished in those cowardly attacks.  We also honor the brave emergency personnel and service members all around the world.  It’s been nine years since that fateful day and I still get asked if those attacks warranted a war.  I am amazed at how many people still don’t get it.  We are not over there because of “revenge” or “getting even”.  We are over there because Americans don’t stand idly by while human rights are being violated.  We don’t simply watch as an entire country is oppressed by a ruthless dictator.  Americans stand up.  We fight for the principles of Freedom and Liberty our great Nation was founded on.

Sponsor Feedback

Dear HeroBox,
We are the Peace Officers’ Annuity and Benefit Fund of Georgia.  Our secretary, Robert Carter, is a member of the Rotary Club of Griffin.  During one of their meetings, a guest speaker spoke to them about HeroBox.  Mr. Carter came back to the office and mentioned it to the staff.  We are all patriotic and wanted to help our troops.  I volunteered to sign our office up online.  It was so simple and once submitted I was given the information for our hero.  I emailed him immediately asking him what we could do for him.  He responded with his list.  The ladies in our office all took a part of that list and we put together a really nice package for him.  The added touch was the Brownie Troop 256 of which I am a co-leader of made Christmas cards for Soldiers in his Troop.  We also added local information about our town, extra magazines and a picture of all of us at the office.  We sent the box and he received it a few weeks later.  He wrote us a wonderful email thanking us.  He was not expecting such a well put together package.  This has been such an awesome experience for me as well as our office.  We worked together to put something special together for our hero.  I am certain he will enjoy the next one.

Sincerely,

Anne Purifoy

Cannon students collect for HeroBox

At Cannon School, all students in grades 9-12 must put in at least 40 hours of “service learning,” or volunteer time, over the course of four years in order to graduate.

Juniors Mallory Chepke and Shelby Dyl, both 17 and from Davidson, said they’ve already easily surpassed that number by helping at their churches and volunteering with area nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity and The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Most recently, the duo led an effort at their school for HeroBox, a two-year-old national nonprofit that “sponsors” deployed U.S. soldiers and sends moral support via customized care packages and letters.

We first heard of HeroBox while visiting Stone Mountain on Memorial Day weekend.  We visited the booth they had set up and I thought it was a fantastic idea.  My boys, ages 13 and 8 thought so also.  We sent all kinds of stuff, mostly snacks.  My boys helped pick out things to send.  It is a great program for a class to sponsor, church group or people you work with.  Just a little effort and time means a lot to someone far away from home giving themselves for our freedom.

Thanks HeroBox!

The Major visits Stacey David

We were in Nashville yesterday to film an episode of Stacey David’s Gearz.  You never know what to expect from celebrities you admire when you actually meet them in person.  Stacey greatly exceeded our expectations.  He was one of the coolest and most down to earth people I have ever met.  He sat around the truck and talked to us off camera like we were a long time friends.  This was an amazing experience for HeroBox that will generate a lot of support for the troops.  See all the pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/myherobox/Project59#

From the Joint Task Force in Kabul

We received a wonderful letter, award and photos in the mail today from the 1st BN, 118th Field Artillery Regiment in Kabul Afghanistan.  It is truly humbling to receive thanks from the heroes that provide the very freedom we enjoy.  They are coming home in March and we look forward to their safe return.

6 year old’s efforts to support the troops.

“Our family sponsors troops through HeroBox, so my son is familiar with the cause. I was asked by his kindergarten teacher to organize the Christmas party for his class, when I asked my son if he had any good ideas for the party he asked if we could dedicate it to our troops! With tears in my eyes I responded with a resounding yes and we began our mission to inform the school of our plans. We used the list off of your site to make a list of wanted items and conformed a letter to the parents asking for donations. The kids decorated Christmas cards and we packed a HeroBox full of goodies and sent them to the troops.  Not only did the kids feel good about what they had done but we used it as a lesson on the spirit of giving. It was the best party ever!
Thanks for the opportunity!” ~ Kate and Bailey Jackson
